(Ben voyons donc !)
4) Aille heu… le dj y peux-tu mettre du psy-trance? (heu NON)
5) J’ai perdu mon bracelet en dansant… (yeah right)
(Iiiiiicchhhhhh !)

If you’ve spent any time wandering up and down Duluth Street, you’ve probably spotted what you thought was a deserted store with a bright turquoise-green interior, frozen in time. The story is a little more complicated than that.
77 rue Duluth was owned by a certain Mr. Gillman, who was a fixture of the neighbourhood for many, many years. He supplied local businesses with wholesale goods and sundry sweets until a couple of years ago, when his health took a turn for the worse. He recently passed away and now his space is being transformed, but his memory lives on.
The new owner, Binky Holleran, will install the second incarnation of her Fuschia café in the space, but not before celebrating it with artistic interventions and a documentary about P. Gillman’s life (if you knew Mr. Gillman and have some memories to share, she invites you to drop by Fuschia Wednesday to Saturday between noon and seven, or drop a note in the mail slot). To help raise funds for this heritage do-gooding, Binky is hosting an auction of the curios left behind, such as the beautifully-package vintage Noxema product pictured below.

A couple of weeks ago, Montreal artist Sarah Wendt performed a contemporary dance piece/living installation of sorts to celebrate the space. After her final performance, there was a fund-raising event with music, of which I snapped a few photos (with my ISO-challenged camera). Click on the pics below for the respective photo sets.

Tonight is the the 2nd edition of Paperbag, an art show of designs made on brown paper bags. There’s a silent auction that will continue on the Web for a week. The show itself ends December 23rd.
Sadly, it’s the last showing at Madame Edgar, because madame has decided to shutter up the storefront in favour of focusing all energies on producing a variety of designer objects. So while the boutique may be closing, we can look forward to more stationery, designer toys and objects, and the always interesting paperjam online magazine.
On a more joyful note than my last entry, Pheek is throwing a party in Montreal this Friday night to celebrate the release of his new album. Featuring high-quality guest DJs Butane (Berlin) and Tim Xavier (NYC), and local heroes Baya and Kasteniede, all of whom will play on a state-of-the-art sound system by Ledoux Acoustique, it promises to be a memorable night. See you there?

If you are in Montreal tonight, I strongly encourage you to head over to O Patro Vys for the sublime musical experience offered by Moondata’s LABproject series.
The LABproject series is the project that best expresses the concepts that govern Moondata. Based around ideas of collaboration & open-minded approaches to the creative process, it is presented as a monthly event to which artists are invited to participate in a live, improvised concert that has musicians, visuals artists and DJs performing together in a ‘very special one-time only performance’. With a line-up that changes from month to month, many of the participants meet and work together for the first time on the day of the show.
As is the case with many open-ended experiments in music-making, the music ranges in influence - from jazz to psych-rock, electronica, IDM, to music actuelle or pop, at any given show. With energy focused on composition as well as interpretation the listener is treated in turn to cohesive musical themes interspersed with barrier- free exploration. This unique approach that melds improvisation and composition makes the performances dynamic and highly exciting for the musicians and audiences alike.

This weekend, Montreal’s Old Port is the setting for an art happening, Les escales improbables, which translates as “unlikely ports of call” in English.
Featuring artists from Quebec, France and Morocco, the event promises everything from “musical siestas to interactive performances, from impromptu concerts to philosophical conversations,” all with the goal of (re)learning how to do nothing but see, hear, feel and be.
My good friends Les Passagers, a VJ outfit that also has a couple of art installations to their credit, are presenting an installation and performance entitled L’homme-Oiseau. Collaborators include Lyne Nault (human/bird), Steve Savage (words), and Dany Fraser (sound).

Good thing the coming weekend is a long one, because there’s going to be a lot to pack into what appears to be too few days after sifting through the options. I finally had to resort to making a sort of schedule, which looks something like this:
Any dissenting opinions? Fellow travellers?
PS If you didn’t click on “chill”, you should: it’s a great read…
Tonight (and every Friday if I’m not mistaken UPDATE: actually, it’s a monthly that tends to fall on the last Friday of the month–my bad), Montreal’s fabled Musique Risquée label hosts you and your dancing shoes at Academy, 4445 St-Laurent, starting at 10 pm. Cover is $8.
This Friday’s lineup:
ARK - Live
(Circus Company, Perlon / France)
AKUFEN - Dj
(Musique Risquée)
VINCENT LEMIEUX - Dj
(Musique Risquée)
MC will be in da house. And you?

At 6 pm tonight at Laïka, Agence Topo will be launching an audiovisual DVD featuring the work of a few friends and acquaintances. The DVD can also be ordered online.
Disc two contains 5mm by Marc Leclair and Gabriel Coutu-Dumont, which was initially presented at Mutek this year in June.
